The Three Flags

During this year's Three Flags event, Jay Kuhns and Eric Peterson participated and earned their buckle after riding 2066 miles from Mexico to Canada.

Last spring, Eric mentioned to Jay that he'd like to try out the Three Flags Classic ride. Sponsored by the Southern California Motorcycle Association (SCMA), this year's event, over Labor Day weekend began in Puerto Penasco Mexico on Friday morning and finished Monday evening in Calgary, Alberta.  Additionally, check points were in  Kanab, Utah;  Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Ponderay, Idaho.

The entry included a start and finish dinner and each checkpoint had snacks for you at sign-in. Eric said that the border crossings where they arrived en-masse were cordial and pretty quick and further said that "upon returning to the U.S. on our own, the greeting we received at the border was something less than polite, oh well."  Continuing, Eric said:

For most of the ride, you’d pass and be passed by the same 5 - 6 riders, larger groups were rare.

We rode in everything from 107ºF to 36ºF and drizzle and sea level to over 9000 ft. The great majority of their route was avoiding interstates for nearly 2100 miles.

Something for your ‘Bucket List’…

Ride Far, Ride Safe.

Next year will begin in Canada and finish in Mexico..

History (from the official website)

Josef Usatin established this event in 1976 to be ridden over the Labor Day weekend. The ride originates from Mexico and finishes in Canada but occasionally may begin in Canada and finish in Mexico.

Each year, the event begins and finishesin a city different from the prior year. The ride commences on Friday and completes on Monday evening. The normal distance is approximately 2,100 miles and requires riders to reach 3 checkpoints along the route within a specified time. On 5-year anniversaries the event is extended to 5-days with 4 checkpoints and added mileage to around 2,400 miles.

The event is not a race, but more of a rally with riders coming from North America and occasionally from other countries outside of North America. It has become a social event with many riders renewing old time friendships….two of our riders have continuously ridden the event for the last 40 year. Many of our riders have over 20 years of participation.

The number of riders varies between the years and ranges from 200 to 350 motorcyclists. Presently we have 290 registrants and expect 10-25 additional riders before closing registration.

Safety Tips for Solo Adventure Motorcycle Riding

Adventure motorcycle riding offers a thrilling and liberating experience, especially when exploring new terrains alone. However, riding solo also comes with its own set of challenges and risks. To ensure a safe and enjoyable journey, it is crucial to prioritize safety measures. In this blog, we will discuss some essential tips for staying safe while riding solo on a motorcycle during adventure trips.

1. Plan and Prepare:

Before embarking on your solo adventure, plan your route thoroughly. Research the areas you will be riding through, including road conditions, weather forecasts, and potential hazards. Ensure your motorcycle is in excellent condition, with all necessary maintenance and repairs completed before the trip. Pack essential tools, spare parts, and emergency supplies, including a first aid kit.

2. Dress Appropriately:

Wearing the right gear is vital for rider safety. Invest in a high-quality helmet, protective riding jacket, pants, gloves, and boots. Opt for gear that offers adequate protection against impact, abrasion, and weather conditions. Bright-colored clothing and reflective elements can enhance visibility, especially during low-light situations.

Pro-TipKeep a tourniquet on your body at all times!
(save your life for only $10 on Amazon)

3. Stay Alert and Focused:

Maintain a high level of concentration while riding solo. Avoid distractions such as using your phone or listening to loud music. Stay vigilant and anticipate potential hazards on the road, including wildlife, debris, and sudden changes in weather conditions. Regularly check your mirrors and be aware of your surroundings.

4. Take Breaks and Stay Hydrated:

Long rides can be physically and mentally exhausting. Take regular breaks to rest, stretch, and hydrate. Fatigue can impair your judgment and reaction time, so it's essential to stay well-rested and hydrated throughout your journey.

5. Share Your Itinerary:

Inform a trusted friend or family member about your travel plans, including your route and estimated time of arrival at each destination. Regularly update them on your progress. This ensures that someone is aware of your whereabouts and can raise an alarm if needed.

Pro-TipShare your location with your emergency contact using Google Maps or Apple Maps.  Consider using a paid GPS service like Spotwalla, Garmin)

2024 Model Update: Intelligent Emergency Call is available as standard or as an option for select 2024 models.  See this MOA news post for more information. Intelligent Emergency Call adds a covered SOS button, loudspeaker and microphone to the right-side handlebar controls.

6. Trust Your Instincts:

While adventure riding can be exhilarating, it's crucial to trust your instincts and avoid unnecessary risks. If a situation feels unsafe or beyond your capabilities, it's better to turn back or seek assistance. Remember, your safety should always be the top priority.

Conclusion:

Solo adventure motorcycle riding can be an incredible experience, allowing you to explore new horizons and challenge yourself. However, it's crucial to prioritize safety at all times. By planning ahead, wearing appropriate gear, staying alert, taking breaks, and sharing your itinerary, you can significantly reduce the risks associated with riding solo. Remember, the key to a successful adventure is to strike a balance between excitement and caution. Stay safe and enjoy the ride!
