PREZ GREETINGS

Our riding season has begun, thank once again to Jay Kuhns for organizing and leading the annual ride to Taos NM for lunch and the kickoff of the BMWMOA mileage contest. Next up is the Primitive Campout outside Canon City on 4-5 May 23, John Spencer provided an update last Sunday at our monthly club breakfast and it sounds like a number of members are planning on attending – thanks John!

The club campout follows 31 May – 2 Jun 24 at the Arrowhead Campground just north of Buena Vista, this is one of my favorite club events; hope to see everyone there. The BMWMOA rally is 13-15 June 24 in Redmond OR with many club members planning on making the trip.

Hope everyone has their motorcycle maintenance completed; I just finished my RT and installed a fresh set of tires – ready for summer!

2024 Riding to the BMW MOA National Rally (and CJR)

Who's going!?

If you riding to the National Rally, one of the best things we can do is have an emergency recall roster in case you get into a bind.  You will at least know who should be nearby to potentially help.  If you are riding the rally, please fill out the below confidential survey and Andy will make the list available to only those riding to Nationals.

Top 5 Tips for a Cross-Country Motorcycle Ride:

1. Personal Preparation:

- Plan your route meticulously, considering factors like weather, road conditions, and fuel stops.
- Pack essentials such as appropriate riding gear, water, snacks, and a first aid kit.
- Ensure you're physically prepared with adequate rest, hydration, and any necessary medications.
- Familiarize yourself with local traffic laws and regulations along your route.
- Share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member for safety.

2. Motorcycle Maintenance:

- Conduct a thorough pre-ride inspection, checking tire pressure, brakes, lights, and fluid levels.
- Service your motorcycle according to manufacturer recommendations, especially if nearing mileage intervals.
- Carry essential tools and spare parts for minor repairs on the road.
- Double-check luggage mounting to ensure it won't interfere with controls or balance.
- Consider installing accessories like a GPS unit, phone mount, or additional lighting for added convenience and safety.

By prioritizing personal readiness and ensuring your motorcycle is in optimal condition, you'll set yourself up for a smoother and more enjoyable cross-country journey. Safe travels!

Meet your PPBMWR Treasurer

Theresa Henderson, TREASURER

I was born in North Dakota and went to college in Helena, MT where I met my husband, Dean at Mr. Lucky’s.  We have been married 43 years and have had many adventures along the way.  We moved to Colorado Springs in 1986 from Montana with our two young children for a job with the phone company.  Our kids are grown, and we now have three grandsons to fill our days.  I love my ‘Grandma time’ and will travel to spend time with them whenever I can.

Dean introduced me to the motorcycle world early in our relationship.  We enjoy all types of motorcycling and have been involved with motocross, supercross, enduros, road riding and touring. I have been asked why I don’t ride my own bike, well quite frankly, I enjoy all that I see and experience without having to worry about paying attention.  I have a very good rider in front of me and with me being ‘a pillion rider’, we complement each other really well.  We have owned many brands of motorcycles and reminisce about our trips and all the wonderful people we have met along the way.

Dean & I are retired now and enjoy riding our 2018 BMW K1600 B on day trips, long weekend getaways and have become ‘rally rats’ as we travel around the country meeting old and new friends.  We are looking forward to the warmer weather and getting a few more motorcycle miles on the bike.

Blind Spots Safety TIPS

by Andy Dills

Title: Riding Safe: Navigating Blind Spots Around Cars and Trucks

When you're on two wheels, mastering the art of awareness is crucial. Around cars and trucks, blind spots pose a significant risk. Stay visible by positioning yourself strategically, avoiding lingering in blind spots. Remember, if you can't see the driver's mirrors, they likely can't see you.

For cars, hover either behind or ahead, but not alongside. For trucks, maintain a safe distance, especially on the right side. Utilize signals and hand gestures to communicate intentions clearly. Anticipate lane changes and give ample space. And always, keep your eyes scanning for potential hazards.

By staying vigilant and proactive, you empower yourself to navigate the roads safely, minimizing the risk of collisions in these high-risk areas. Safe riding isn't just a choice; it's a responsibility we owe to ourselves and others.

First Aid Kit

In the past newsletters, we addressed various safety gear.  On page 54 of the BMW MOA April 2024 Magazine, Dr. Hoffman provided an article on Remote First Aid and Survival for the Off-Grid Rider.  Highly recommend you opening to page 54 and read it!  Here's a little to wet your interest...

  • A few steps to take if your group experiences an off-road accident, e.g.

First Aid -> EMS -> Stabilization/Extraction -> Prep for longer stay

  • Things to include in your first aid kit, e.g.

Tourniquet, Quick-clot, electrolytes, splint, clean water production, knife
