PREZ NOTES

July is here already
and our summer is in full swing.

As many of you know, our club had a very good representation at the BMWMOA Rally in Doswell, VA; and, for me, it was the longest motorcycle trip of my life.

The group I travelled with to the rally was comprised of Dean and Theresa Henderson, Brent Berry and myself. Brent did an awesome job creating the GPS routes for the 4-day trip to the Smokey Mountains where we would spend 3-days riding the “Dragons”.

In Wythesville, VA we met up with two other club members, Ross Thacker and Andy Dills. We got most of our planned rides in except for the “Claw-of-the-Dragon” which was rained out but gave us a day off. On the final leg to the rally we stopped to see the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, there is so much of our countries history all around you.

Once at the rally and settling in to our new home for 3-days we met up with Jay Kuhns and Bill Santiago.

At the rally we enjoyed different activities the MOA had setup (beer and whiskey tours, historical tours, seminars, farkle shopping, meeting friends old and new, and, oh yes, the beer garden). As expected, the 3-days at the rally went quickly!

Our group split into three for the return trip home; the Henderson’s, Brent and Ross chose a more scenic route (longer), Andy had family events in the area to attend, and Jay, Bill and I took the direct (3-day) route back.

All in all, it was a great experience for me not only for the ride but also spending so much time with friends; which is the best part of all!

Editor's note: Rob Ryland also attended MOA rally and spent most of his time volunteering. Thanks Rob for greasing the wheels for a flawless rally! Also Matthew Parkhouse gave a seminar and Susanna Parkhouse chaired the Karol Patzer MOA Children’s Charity. Thanks for adding valuable content for us participants!

                               A Few Close Calls

With the riding season at its peak, we've all enjoyed some amazing rides, comrodary, site seeing, food, and fellowship.  With more riding often comes more reports of accidents and close calls. This newsletter is dedicated to two close calls within our camp and fortunately is being reported as a positive and upbeat message.  Please take a few moments to read the messages from an interview with Scott Hellzen and a letter from Kris Geller.

Scott Hellzen and Taylor: another life saved

by Andy Dills

By now, most of you know that Scott Hellzen and Taylor, who regularly ride together, were in a motorcycle accident on June 5th 2023 that resulted in Taylor breaking an arm and Scott losing his right leg – both escaping a life-threatening event.

A few days ago, I was able to have a discussion with Scott about this day and the recovery to date.  When I arrived at his house, he just pulled in with his sister and joyfully yelled out to me to come on in.  He then just jumped out of his car, got on his crutches, and hopped right on into the house like it was nothing – both physically or mentally.  At that moment, I really realized the character and strength in Scott went very deep, as some of you already know.

So knowing Scott like we all do, he sat down at the table and just jumped right into, “Okay, so the thing I would do differently is…”  Basically, Scott emphasized the need to be on intercoms when riding together because Scott could have warned him that the curve was coming up and tight.  If intercoms are not available, he recommends riders use their GPS or maps so that they know where the turns are coming up.

In this accident, they were traveling about 60-65 mph when Scott, as the lead rider, disappeared over a hill that hid a tight 20-mph turn.  When Taylor topped the hill, he had a split second to respond to a scene of basically Scott sitting broadside just in front of him (if you take time slowing down during an accident and heightened adrenaline).

So what happened next was a combination of a miraculous saving and quick emergency action.  With no other option, the second bike hit Scott directly on his right leg – Scott knew in that instant that his leg was gone.

He said that he was knocked straight up and the bike did a 180. Right there in that action and trauma, Scott directed the first person who stopped to give him his belt, of which Scott immediately created a tourniquet around his bleeding leg.  Going into like an automated command sergeant mode, Scott continued to direct people to keep his head up above his heart, stop traffic, put vehicles above and below the hill.  In fact, the highway patrolman later told him at the ICU that he couldn’t talk to Scott because Scott was too busy giving orders out.  We love you Scott!

Overall, everyone that arrived at the scene was very helpful according to Scott and increased our confidence in our fellow human beings.  In fact, there was an ER nurse on her way home that stopped and knew exactly what to do and got him completely ready for the ambulance (30 minutes later!).

Despite all this, Scott remembers the ER doctor holding his head, yelling at him “come back, come back, open your eyes, you’re in the emergency room!”  She did that twice over three and a half hours to save his life.

During the emergency, Scott had all three arteries broken/non-fixable in his leg and the doctor did everything to save as much of his leg as possible – in addition to Scott saying, “She saved my life.”

During this time, Taylor was greatly concerned for Scott and according to Scott was following every instance of the ER evolution to save Scott’s life.  Taylor was anxiously waiting to hear Scott’s voice to know that his friend was alive.

Finally, Scott says everyone should carry a tourniquet on your body where you can reach it – not on your bike or anywhere else.  This one device was the key to slowing the bleeding that ultimately saved Scott’s life.  You never know when a severe accident will occur – like in this case, two highly skilled riders who regularly ride together faced a life-and-death accident.

What’s next for Scott?  In short, everything.  Prosthetics and a few RT modifications will allow him to continue to ride, ski, drive, and, well everything.

Scott is so grateful for the support and encouragement – which he highlights “so that’s my community” – from his current and former dealership peers and management, PPBMWR club members, long time riding friends, family, and especially Ana.

As a final take away, Scott said a good friend of his from the military called him up and said he needed to “have a positive outlook, don’t look back because it was an accident, and just look forward and figure out what you can do and get going on it.”  Another helicopter vet friend reiterated to him, “you’ll get through it, and that’s what you have to be. You have to be positive.”

Note: if you want to help in Scott's additional medical expenses, you can either give to him directly or through this Go Fund Me link.

Kris Geller vs the Deer

To my friends at PPBMW Riders:

After spending eighteen months unable to ride while I recovered from four different surgeries I was feeling pretty good when I decided to ride with my friend Guenther to the 49’ers rally in Mariposa California over Memorial Day weekend. We took it easy going out covering about fourteen hundred miles in three and a half days. When it was time to pack up head for home after enjoying nice weather and good times we decided that I would lead since I had a working GPS. That morning riding up Hwy. 49 outside of Sonora a doe and her fawn came at me full speed from the side. I never saw them until they both crashed into my front wheel and sent me bouncing down the road.

I don’t recall anything much after that until I could hear the spinning blades of the helicopter when they airlifted me to a trauma hospital in Modesto where I spent the next thirteen days. After a few days of chest x-rays and wait and see the doctor told me that two of the eight broken ribs in my back were pushed into my lung and that I would not be able to heal without surgery to plate the ribs and staple the lung back together.

My motorcycle and all of my gear are finally on their way back to Colorado after paying the thief at the towing company $2000. for storage and another $950. to Motorcycle Shippers to pick it up and deliver it to my house. The $500 to tow the bike fourteen miles was paid by my friends at AAA. I would have been released from the hospital wearing  nothing but a pair of paper pants with no pockets for my wallet and my phone, the two things that went to the hospital with me. My wife Christine had tried to send clothes to the Hospital but they had only a PO box and told her they would probably never reach me. Christine was able to send clothes to my new friend that I met for the first time at the rally who offered to drive four hours from his home in Morrow Bay and spend the next two days with me until I was on an Amtrak train home. We went to his cousin’s house in Pollock Pines between Placerville and Lake Tahoe where I was treated with kindness that I will never forget. The cousin’s wife Dona who was very computer savvy spent considerable time securing for me an e- ticket on Amtrak.

Now I am home and very glad to be here. I’m not yet sure how I feel about riding again once I have healed but I do know that there are no finer people than the friends I have made over my sixty years of motorcycling and I'm not about to give up that part of my life.

Your friend,
Kris Geller
